Gus, the Vice Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, attended a joint hearing on July 25 with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki titled "Back From the Battlefield: DoD and VA Collaboration to Assist Service Members Returning to Civilian Life." His question was about efforts to combat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD.
Last year, Gus introduced bipartisan legislation to improve rehabilitation services for veterans suffering from TBI. Because of ambiguities in current law, TBI treatment at the Department of Veterans Affairs narrowly focuses TBI care on physical restoration. The legislation would clarify the definition of rehabilitation so veterans will receive care that adequately addresses their physical and mental health needs, as well as quality of life and prospects for long-term recovery and success.
