As the unemployment remains unacceptably high, promoting job creation must be a priority for Congress. Small businesses and entrepreneurs create jobs, not the federal government and to foster real economic growth Congress must reform the tax code and relieve the burden of excessive regulations on our nation’s job creators. Economic prosperity for our region will not come from bureaucrats in Washington or Tallahassee, but from the hard work and ingenuity of the American people. Instead of more handouts, government needs to give a "hand up" to those in our communities who want to pursue their own unique vision of the American dream. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on the Environment and the Economy, Congressman Bilirakis advocates for modernizing and reducing excessive and ineffective regulations that are standing in the way of local job creation.
Tourism and travel employ over one million Floridians. In recent years, tourism to Florida has resulted in more than $70 billion for its economy. According to VISIT Florida, every 85 visitors to our state results in a new job created. That is why I have introduced the Travel Promotion, Enhancement, and Modernization Act, which would extend the activities of Brand USA - a public-private partnership that markets the United States as a tourism destination - through 2020. This will continue to bring jobs and economic growth to Florida.
More on Jobs
America is the land of opportunity. Yet after decades of programs in which trillions of dollars have been spent, some people are still stuck in the cycle of poverty. In order to fix the problem, we need to think differently. I am working to help Americans pursue the careers they want and contribute to our thriving nation. I am working to help people get back on their feet.
Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) this week held two town hall meetings in Florida’s twelfth congressional district to discuss legislative issues with constituents. The Congressman provided the local community with an update on the work he has been doing in Congress.
It’s no wonder Americans pay tens of millions of dollars a year for tax preparers to wade through 70,000 pages worth of tax law. The tax code is confusing, and sends too much money to Washington and too many jobs overseas. I am working towards a simpler, fairer, and flatter tax code, so that it will be easier for small business owners, families, and individuals to do taxes and have peace of mind. Simplifying our tax code will lead to more jobs, better wages, and more opportunities for all Americans.
Many of my constituents, local businesses, and organizations are struggling in today’s economy. Although our state brings in many tourists and our local businesses continue working hard to help our communities thrive, our government is not encouraging and embracing growth as best it could. We need to cut red tape to allow more growth, our laws need to be updated, and we need to reform the economic system to get our nation back on top.
This month, Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) and the entire Greater Tampa Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers supporting funding for the Anclote River dredging project.
In recognition for his work to promote travel and tourism, Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) yesterday was honored by the American Society of Travel Agents with the Congressional Travel Advocate Award. The Congressman’s Travel Promotion, Enhancement, and Modernization Act was signed into law last year and has helped Florida maintain its reputation as one of America’s top destinations for tourists.
Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) released the following statement following the President’s State of the Union Address:
“The President, once again, delivered his laundry list of empty goals and failed policies during his final address to the American people tonight.
While he may be content with the path he has paved, I remain dedicated to leading our nation down a solid road with a brighter, more prosperous future.
