Gus Continues Push to Improve Visa Security
Earlier this week, Gus signed on as an original co-sponsor to the Secure Visas Act, a bill introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) that will enhance the way we protect our nation and secure our borders.
This bill would maintain and increase Visa Security Units in ?highest-risk? countries and would end judicial review for revocation of terrorists? visas.
While many people use the visa program for legitimate reasons, it has often been used as a way for terrorists to enter the U.S. with the intent to cause harm.
Gus was joined by Reps. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.), Ken Calvert (R-Calif.), Steve King (R-Iowa), and Ted Poe (R-Texas) as original co-sponsors of HR 1741.
In addition to co-sponsoring HR 1741, Gus has been a leader in working to improve visa security:
In March, Gus introduced the Student Visa Security Improvement Act, which will improve the background checks conducted on student visa applicants from high-risk areas and enhance America's ability to ensure that foreign students are abiding by the terms of their visas once in the U.S. (Read more here)
An initiative from Gus to enhance the Visa Security Program overseas was signed into law as part of the Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Homeland Security Act. (Read more here)
