As Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications, Gus is responsible for oversight of FEMA, emergency grant programs, communication during emergency situations, and disaster response and recovery efforts. This includes bioterrorism preparedness and assessing medical countermeasures.

On Oct. 5, the Suncoast News highlighted some of the efforts Gus has taken to address bioterrorism and medical countermeasures.

NEW PORT RICHEY - On the 10th anniversary of the scare from anthrax-tainted mail, some elected leaders are taking a hard look at bioterrorism countermeasures.

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor, for one, is not pleased with what he finds.

The congressman has held two hearings about medical countermeasures and the best ways to distribute them, Creighton Welch pointed out as press secretary for Bilirakis.
