Bilirakis Addresses Evolving Sharing Economy
Today, the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade held a hearing to discuss the sharing economy and what it means for jobs, consumers, and legislative policies. Innovative companies like Uber, Airbnb, Thumbtack, and others are using modern technology to run businesses efficiently. These companies are creating new jobs and new options for consumers while increasing competition and convenience.
"As the sharing economy evolves, we face new opportunities and challenges," said Congressman Bilirakis. "With approximately 80 million Americans utilizing the sharing economy technology and services, it is important we consider any policy issues related to this industry."
"As the technology surrounding this effort increases, so must our vigilance as policymakers in facilitating an environment conducive to its growth," Bilirakis added. "We must work to adequately provide necessary protections for the everyday consumer and promote further innovation and competition."
Witnesses and members discussed the ways current regulations hinder these businesses as well as future needs for the industry. The committee will continue its work to ensure that our laws are up to speed with advances in technology and the evolving economy.
