Bilirakis Applauds Governor for Requesting Federal Disaster Declaration, Urges FEMA to Expedite Request
Washington, D.C. - Congressman Gus Bilirakis applauds Governor Rick Scott’s announcement that he has requested that the President issue a federal disaster declaration for multiple counties in Florida, including Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough. If approved, this measure will enable FEMA to provide financial assistance to the individuals whose homes have sustained serious flood damage. Over the past few weeks, Congressman Bilirakis has toured areas in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties that have been devastated by flooding. “These constituents are suffering. They need help now and deserve to have their elected officials, at all levels, working together to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions that will prevent future problems,” stated Congressman Bilirakis.
After the Governor declared a state of emergency in early August, Congressman Bilirakis urged FEMA to provide technical assistance to state and local teams that were assessing damage. He then worked closely with both FEMA Administrators and the Governor as those initial assessment reports were completed and reviewed, advocating for local residents each step along the way. Additionally, Bilirakis spoke to Colonel Kirk, Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to request his agency’s support as long-term plans are developed by county leaders to improve drainage and storm water systems. Immediately after the Governor’s request this morning, Congressman Bilirakis sent a letter to FEMA Administrator asking that Governor Scott’s request be expedited and approved to ensure that funds are provided to victims as quickly as possible. Bilirakis will continue to serve as a liaison between local leaders, his constituents and federal agencies.
