Bilirakis Celebrates Advancement of Provision to Protect Access to AM Radio
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, today celebrated the advancement of his provision to preserve access to AM radio as part of the Surface Transportation Infrastructure Bill approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee this week. The provision ensures that AM radio remains accessible in motor vehicles, recognizing its critical role in public safety communications, emergency alerts, news dissemination, and community engagement - particularly during natural disasters and severe weather events.
“AM radio remains an essential communications tool for millions of Americans, especially during emergencies when reliable access to information can save lives,” said Bilirakis. “For generations, AM radio has connected communities with emergency alerts, local news, weather updates, and public safety information. As technology evolves, we must ensure that this trusted and resilient platform remains available to the public.”
Bilirakis emphasized that the provision is particularly important for disaster-prone states like Florida, where residents rely heavily on AM radio during hurricanes and other emergencies when power outages and network disruptions can limit access to other forms of communication.
“Preserving AM radio is about more than convenience - it is about public safety, emergency preparedness, and ensuring Americans continue to have access to critical information when they need it most,” Bilirakis added. “I am pleased to see this provision move forward as part of the broader infrastructure package.”
The Surface Transportation Infrastructure Bill, including the AM radio provision, now advances for further consideration in the legislative process.
