Bilirakis Continues Work to Help Veterans, Hold VA Accountable
This week, the House Veterans' Affairs Committee continued work to help our nation's Veterans and hold the VA accountable.
On Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Health held a hearing to review legislation to improve the Veterans' Benefits Programs, increase transparency at the VA, and support Veterans and their families.
"These important bills will help us to address the shortcomings in the VA and hold this agency accountable," said Vice Chair Gus Bilirakis (R-FL). "It is our duty to ensure our Veterans receive the care and support they deserve."
On Wednesday, the full committee reviewed the continued lack of accountability at the VA. Members continued their work to identify the many deficiencies and steps to address the ongoing issues at the VA.
NBC Washington recently reported many misconducts at the VA that were highlighted in an investigation. Employees who behaved inappropriately have not yet been fired or reprimanded properly for their actions. This news follows many similar reports on employee abuse, scandal, and lack of transparency and accountability within the VA.
Members pressed VA employees on this irresponsible behavior. Congressman Gus Bilirakis questioned VA Deputy Secretary Gibson on what the VA is doing to address these issues.
"The reports we've seen throughout the years regarding the countless VA scandals are concerning to say the least," said Congressman Bilirakis. "We must work towards a more transparent, accountable VA. The VA must discipline inappropriate behavior justly and ensure that our Veterans and their needs come first."
Finally, today, the full committee held a briefing on VA and DOD information exchange. Members gained a better understanding of the process and discussed ways to improve transparency and communication.
"Our Veterans have fought for our freedoms, they deserve quality care and services in a transparent and efficient manner," add Bilirakis. "I will continue to do everything I can to improve the lives of our true American heroes."
