Bilirakis Continues Work to Update Communications Laws

December 3, 2015

This week, the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Communications and Technology continued efforts to bring our laws up to speed with advances in technology and the evolving market.

On Tuesday, the Subcommittee advanced H.R. 1641, the Federal Spectrum Incentive Act and a legislative package to improve broadband infrastructure. These bipartisan bills will help boost broadband deployment and increase spectrum availability for communities across the nation.

On Thursday, members held a hearing to discuss media ownership in the 21st century. The current laws regulating broadcast ownership have not been modernized for decades. Members and witnesses discussed ways to update these regulations and allow for a more competitive, innovative, and efficient industry.

"Technology has been moving at a rapid pace," said Congressman Bilirakis. "We have quickly evolved from a media industry dominated by big broadcast companies, to an industry where local broadcast stations and newspapers are now in direct competition with a wide variety of outlets and social media sites. Outdated laws put significant restrictions on, local broadcasters, newspapers, and their ability to efficiently reach their local communities. We need to make sure our laws reflect the ever changing market."

Witnesses expressed their optimism and the many benefits of a more diverse and locally owned broadcast industry if rules were updated at the FCC level. They explained that updated regulations would more adequately serve the needs of all communities.

"In my district, the local radio, television, and newspapers significantly help to connect our communities and keep them in the know. By working with stakeholders we can determine the best ways to improve regulations and promote localism and competition for a more vibrant industry."
