Bilirakis: “Hillsborough County is leading the charge to bring technology to public transportation”
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (FL-12), a member of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee, touted the innovative Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) system during a hearing on spectrum and wireless technology. Hillsborough County is soon set to operate a first-of-its-kind autonomous public bus system based on wireless 5G capabilities.
“I’m immensely proud that Hillsborough County, part of my district and part of our Tampa Bay community, is leading the charge to bring innovative technology to the public transportation sector. As HART’s autonomous shuttles become a reality, and as the nation's demand for wireless and 5G networks soars, I will continue my work on the Subcommittee to unleash the necessary spectrum to support it,” said Bilirakis.
During his questioning, Bilirakis also brought up the impact of wireless capabilities on health care and tele-health technology.
“About 24% of my constituents are seniors, a number well above the national average for a single district. Advancing tele-health technologies could mean huge benefits for the elderly and disabled, allowing them to be evaluated and treated remotely from the comfort of their own home,” Bilirakis added.
