Bilirakis Introduces VA GORDIAN KNOT Act to Untangle VA Issues

Press Release

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) today introduced the VA Guidance for Organizational Reform and Data Integrity for Accountability Needs Key for Necessary and Optimal Transformation (GORDIAN KNOT) Act to solve the puzzle of reforming the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The bill focuses on key areas of improvement within the agency, like enhancing the transparency of data collected and reported, and ensuring greater accountability overall.

“For too long, the VA has managed to get by with a culture of mediocrity. The GORDIAN KNOT Act will help untangle some of the agency’s core problems: lack of accountability and manipulation of data,” said Bilirakis. “In order to help the VA achieve its mission to care for Veterans, we need accurate, transparent data to properly address its shortcomings and enhance its successes. I believe this is absolutely necessary when it comes to reforming the agency tasked with serving our true American heroes.”

THE PROBLEM: Over the years, the VA has been known to yield less than truthful data when it comes to collecting and reporting information about patient care, appointment wait-times, and employee hiring and firing practices. This manipulation of data is an erosion of public trust, and makes it difficult to truly assess the VA’s shortcomings and successes in order to effectively assist them in providing optimal service to Veterans.

THE SOLUTION: The VA GORDIAN KNOT Act requires the VA to standardize their data recording mechanisms, publish the average wait times for each medical facility, and streamline the agency’s organizational structure as well as hiring and firing practices.
