Bilirakis Joins Governor DeSantis to Highlight Need to Recruit New Teachers and Ensure All Children Receive High Quality Education
New Port Richey, FL: Earlier today, U.S. Congressman Gus Bilirakis, a long-time advocate for strengthening public education, joined Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Pasco County Superintendent of Schools Kurt Browning, Senate President Wilton Simpson and other state and local leaders to highlight the urgent need to attract high quality teachers throughout the state of Florida. School districts throughout the state of Florida have been plagued by the same workforce shortages that are seen in many industries and businesses throughout the country, with an estimated 4,000 teachers and 9,000 support personnel positions currently needed throughout the state of Florida.
"Ensuring that all children have a supportive learning environment is a top priority," said Congressman Gus Bilirakis. "Teachers make a lasting impact on the lives of the students they work with and on our entire community. We want to attract the best and brightest among us to fulfill this important role within our society."
Among the potential legislative proposals being considered at the state level to recruit teachers, Governor DeSantis highlighted an existing program to entice Veterans to become classroom teachers. The Governor would like to expand this current initiative to include retired law enforcement and other first responders. New recruits would be eligible for a hiring bonus of up to $5,000 depending on which subject areas they teach. The Governor also unveiled a proposal to create a hands-on apprenticeship model for those who currently hold Associate's degrees and a scholarship program for existing high school teachers to earn their Master's degrees.
