Bilirakis Leads Effort to Defend Floridians from Electricity Cost Increases

November 24, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Representative Gus Bilirakis, member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today led a letter to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator McCarthy, joined by other Florida Republicans, to oppose the ramifications the proposed carbon emissions rule for Existing Electric Utility Generating Units, also known as the Clean Power Plan (CPP), will have on Floridians across the state.

"The EPA's rule places a heavier burden on Florida than other states, despite the fact that Florida has reduced its carbon emissions by 20% since 2005. The CPP will result in Floridians paying more for their electricity. At a time when many Floridians are still struggling, they do not need their power costs increasing," said Bilirakis. "We should be supporting an all-of-the-above energy strategy, unleashing America's domestic, renewable and nonrenewable resources, to reduce the costs of groceries and the costs for heating and cooling your home."

"This rule will result in a level of regulatory uncertainty, with social, economic and environmental consequences that we believe are unacceptable to our constituents," the letter states. To read the letter in its entirety, click here. The letter was signed by:
