Bilirakis PROMISE Advances

February 25, 2016

The House Veterans' Affairs Committee today continued work to support our true American heroes. The committee approved six important bills including Congressman Gus Bilirakis's (R-FL) Jason Simcakoski PROMISE Act to continue efforts to promote safety, patient advocacy, and better access to quality care for Veterans.

"I am proud the committee advanced this crucial bill," said Bilirakis. "The PROMISE Act will address the issues of the overprescribing of opioids and opioid abuse by:

  • increasing safety for opioid therapy and pain management;
  • ensuring more transparency at the VA;
  • encouraging more outreach and awareness of the Patient Advocacy Program for Veterans; and,
  • providing alternative forms of care to address Veterans' health needs."

"Our Veterans sacrificed so much for our country, it is up to us to provide them with the care they have earned and deserve," Bilirakis added. "We must assure safe, quality care for those who have fought for our freedoms. By advancing this bill, we are one step closer to fulfilling our promise to our Veterans."
