Bilirakis Reviews Legislation to Help Veterans
Today, the House Veterans' Affairs Committee Subcommittee on Health held a hearing to review legislative proposals to help our nation's Veterans and their families.
"Our work to improve the lives of our Veterans continues," said Congressman Bilirakis. "These bills will help provide Veterans and their families with the quality care they deserve."
Members discussed draft legislation authored by Congressman Bilirakis, the Promoting Responsible Opioid Management and Incorporating Medical Expertise (PROMISE) Act. This legislation aims to address shortfalls in VA opioid care management.
"I appreciate the Chairman's leadership in bringing this important issue before the Committee," said Bilirakis. "The tragic death of Marine Corps Veteran Jason Simcakoski at the Tomah VA Medical Facility prompted the need for Congressional action. This past August, nearly one year after Jason's death, the Office of the Inspector General released a report that concluded Jason's cause of death was due to mixed drug toxicity and the combination of various medications was the plausible mechanism of action for a fatal outcome. In light of this unfortunate and possibly avoidable tragedy, I will continue advocating for the quick passage of the PROMISE Act to ensure Veterans are cared for in a manner that honors their service. The PROMISE Act seeks to provide the necessary resources and training to effectively treat Veterans with chronic pain so that tragic deaths like Jason's never happen again."
Members and witnesses discussed the PROMISE Act and the benefits this legislation will bring to the VA and for our Veterans.
"Our Veterans have sacrificed so much for our country, and we have a responsibility to ensure they are receiving the quality of care they have earned and deserve," added Bilirakis. "We must hold the VA accountable and encourage quality care for all Veterans who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis."
