Bilirakis Secures First Legislative Win of 2020

Washington, D.C.:  After having eight bills he authored signed into law during 2019, Congressman Bilirakis is proud to announce that another bill he co-authored has passed the House and Senate and is headed to the President to become law.  This bill, his first legislative win of the new year, would increase penalties for anyone caught engaging in illegal broadcasting, sometimes referred to as ‘pirate radio.’ Pirate signals can pose a significant threat to public safety, oftentimes disrupting Federal Aviation Administration operations, the Emergency Alert System and other tools relied upon by first responders engaged in protecting public safety.

We need to make sure that these illegal operators do not interfere with public safety communications,” stated Congressman Bilirakis. These illegal actors not only hurt our economy, but they can prevent people from receiving important emergency information during a crisis. This bill will give teeth to crack down on illegal radio operators by hitting them in their pocketbook and better stop these illegal actors for good. By preventing illegal pirate radio operations, airwaves are kept free for legitimate broadcasters and public safety announcements.”

The Tonko-Bilirakis bill passed out of the House of Representative last February and was approved by the Senate earlier today.
