Bilirakis Sends Letter of Support for Anclote River Dredging

July 27, 2016

This month, Congressman Gus Bilirakis (FL-12) and the entire Greater Tampa Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers supporting funding for the Anclote River dredging project.

Silt has built up on the riverbed preventing many boat operators from navigating the river and offloading their goods in Tarpon Springs, which severely impacts commerce in the Tampa Bay area. Additionally, the shallow conditions prevent the port's ability to operate as a harbor of safe refuge, putting vessels and crew at risk in heavy seas or emergency conditions. Members sent a request for a dredging project, acknowledging the importance of the Anclote River for the Gulf Coast fishing community and for the shipment of goods through the Tarpon Springs port.

"The Anclote River dredging project is necessary to ensure the Gulf Coast economy remains strong and protect vessels and crew," said Congressman Bilirakis. "This project is crucial for the Tarpon Springs community and the entire Tampa Bay area. I hope the Army Corps of Engineers will see the importance of these concerns and help our county and local governments address the growing problem."
