Bilirakis Statement Regarding Iran Nuclear Agreement

November 26, 2013

"I am very concerned about the details of the agreement," said Bilirakis. "Iran's hostile and aggressive regime affects not only the stability of the Middle East, but also the entire world. Iran's track record suggests that it will continue to pursue a nuclear weapon. Wishful thinking is not a good base for sound foreign policy, and we have no reason to trust Iran now, especially considering its ability to put those weapons in the hands of terrorists, like Hezbollah, Al Qaeda and Hamas."

"The international community, through the United Nations, has unanimously condemned and sanctioned Iran for unlawfully enriching uranium in violation of international agreements, including the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty of which Iran is a signatory. I have been a strong supporter of sanctions against the Iranian regime in the past, because of their willful disregard of these treaties. I believe the international community has conceded more than Iran in this agreement. Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, and the United States should not support policies that will allow them to move forward with this goal."
