Bilirakis Unveils Discussion Draft to Protect Children from Exploitation As Part of Big Tech Accountability Package

Washington, D.C.  As part of a comprehensive package of draft bills to hold Big Tech accountable, Congressman Gus Bilirakis released important draft legislation to protect children from online exploitation.  Specifically, the draft will remove federal protections under Section 230 for Big Tech businesses that allow child pornography and child exploitation in circumstances when it was reasonably foreseeable that the illegal content was on their platform. It alsodirects the GAO to conduct a study on how platforms can better work with law enforcement to address illegal content and crimes on their platforms.

“We have an obligation to do a better job protecting children from online predators.  Certainly, the federal government should not be giving a liability shield to companies that facilitate and sometimes even encourage child pornography on their platforms.  It is time to end Section 230 protections for these crimes and give enhanced protections to children who have been victimized and exploited,” said Congressman Gus Bilirakis.  “Additionally, we must empower law enforcement to go after bad actors and provide them with additional tools to keep kids safe.”

Bilirakis is one of 26 Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee who unveiled Big Tech accountability drafts today.  Together these draft bills reflect the groups’ goal of improving transparency and content moderation accountability, reforming Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, promoting competition, and preventing illegal and harmful activity on their platforms.

Big Tech has failed to promote the battle of ideas and free speech by censoring political viewpoints they disagree with. They also don’t do enough to keep our children safe or address illegal content on their platforms. Big Tech has broken our trust that they can be good and responsible stewards of their platforms.  Today, Energy and Commerce Republicans are building on our leadership to hold Big Tech accountable.  Every Republican member of the Energy and Commerce Committee is leading on solutions, and I’m grateful for their hard work to drive meaningful and needed change.” -Cathy McMorris Rodgers
