Bilirakis Votes to Hold the Administration Accountable to the American People

January 10, 2014

"Contrary to the very promises Obamacare was sold on, my constituents have lost their healthcare coverage, have seen their premiums rise and were forced to choose new doctors under the law," said Bilirakis. "Now, they're faced with concerns regarding their personal information and whether it is compromised — all because the President's signature law was never ready for prime time."

"Millions of Americans were forced to sign up for the exchanges in order to avoid individual mandate fines. Now, each of these individuals, including myself, are potential victims of identity theft. The Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act will bring accountability and transparency to the Administration and the healthcare exchanges by requiring HHS to notify these hardworking Americans when their personally identifiable information may have been compromised."

Currently, HHS has the power to determine when and if they notify individuals of a data breach in which their personal information may have been compromised. A government bureaucrat should not decide if the loss of this information constitutes harm.

The Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act would require HHS to notify individuals within two business days when there has been a data breach and their personal information may have been compromised.
