Bilirakis Works to Improve Spectrum Systems

October 7, 2015

Today, the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Communications and Technology held a hearing to examine ways to improve federal spectrum systems.

Spectrum, the highly sought-after radio frequencies that make wireless communications possible, has revolutionized our way of communicating. The Energy and Commerce Committee is working to bring our laws up to speed with the technological advances in the 21st century.

"As technology continues to evolve, and our mobile communications become more and more important in our day to day lives. We need to plan for the future," said Congressman Bilirakis. "We have the opportunity to improve effectiveness of government systems and encourage innovation as we continue to work with stakeholders and experts in the field."

Members and witnesses discussed spectrum needs and reviewed legislation aimed at providing financial incentives for federal users to improve government systems and increase efficiency.

"It is difficult to overstate the importance of good spectrum management on economic development," said Jeffrey Reed of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. "Establishing the right spectrum policies encourages innovation to happen here in the US, putting us in the leadership position to develop and deploy these new technologies."

"Finding solutions to create a consistent, robust pipeline of spectrum that helps to...foster innovation is key to promoting America's economic growth, universal service goals, and technological leadership," added Phillip Berenbroick of Public Knowledge.
