Buchanan and Bilirakis Applaud Passage of Provision to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent
Washington, D.C. – Representatives Vern Buchanan and Gus Bilirakis, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, today announced the inclusion of a provision in the Surface Transportation Infrastructure Bill that would make Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent year-round. This package advanced out of the full Energy and Commerce Committee this week. The provision ends the twice-yearly clock changes that Americans have long criticized as disruptive to families, businesses, schools, and public health. Permanent Daylight Saving Time will provide more evening daylight, promote economic activity, reduce traffic accidents, and improve overall quality of life.
“For years, Floridians have voiced overwhelming frustration with the outdated practice of changing the clocks twice a year. The biannual clock change is inconvenient, unnecessary, and out of step with the needs of today’s families and economy,” said Representative Buchanan and Chairman Bilirakis. “Permanent Daylight Saving Time will provide Americans with greater stability and more usable daylight hours throughout the year. We are pleased to move this long-discussed policy forward as part of this important infrastructure legislation.”
The legislation now advances to the Floor for consideration by the full House of Representatives.
