Future of VA Health Care

Press Release

Future of VA Health Care

On Wednesday, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee held a hearing to discuss the future of Veterans’ health care.  Members had the opportunity to discuss health reform with witnesses from the Commission on Care.

Our Veterans have always been my top priority.  When it comes to Veterans’ health care, to say the least, our heroes deserve much better.  I will continue working to reform the VA to bring our Veterans the quality, timely health care they have earned and deserve.  To be clear, I want to keep the VA intact, but I want to strengthen it while creating more choices for our Veterans.

I questioned the panel on issues raised in the Commission of Care’s final report, most specifically about when our Veterans can expect to see dramatic improvement in the access and quality of care provided by the Veterans Administration:

The Committee additionally held a business meeting to issue a subpoena to Secretary Robert McDonald of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for all pertinent documents related to the complete Administrative Investigation Board’s report on the Aurora, CO replacement medical center construction project and VA’s artwork and ornamental furnishing dating back to the 2010 fiscal year.

“We have requested these documents from the VA for over a year now,” added Bilirakis.  “The budget Congress appropriates on a yearly basis was intended to benefit our nation’s Veterans, not the bureaucracy that prevents our heroes from receiving the care they have earned and deserve.  These documents are necessary to understand how this happened and how we move forward.  Our Veterans and our taxpayers deserve answers and the VA must be held accountable.”
