Six Years On, Bilirakis Remembers 9/11

September 10, 2007
WASHINGTON (Sep. 11) -- U.S. Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis (R-Fla.), member of the House Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs Committees, today released a statement reflecting upon the sixth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States.

"On September 11, 2001, Islamist extremists struck a bloody accord with America and reminded us that we are no longer protected by our nation's long shores and military might.

"The terrorists, who struck our country with great fury, failed in their attempt to scare us from the world and our way of life. By all accounts, they failed in their bid to deter us from being Americans and the freedoms we cherish.

"Today is about remembering those who died in the September 11th attacks as well as those who sacrificed their lives in a courageous attempt to save others on that fateful day.

"We shall never forget their heroism and the senseless suffering this caused our nation.

"As we remember the fallen on September 11th, we must also remember the Americans both at home and abroad who stand watch on the frontlines of a continuing battle against violent extremism and terrorism.

"Six years on, countless intelligence reports and Osama bin Laden's most recent call for a ‘caravan of martyrs' against America is a stark reminder that the terrorist threat against us is real, sustained and determined.

"Our continued vigilance and commitment to the fight against such extremism is pivotal to America's security and in winning this Global War on Terror."
