Subcommittee Advances Bilirakis Bill to Protect Seniors From Fraud

June 9, 2016

The Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, today advanced a series of bills that seek to modernize the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for the 21st century.

Congressman Bilirakis's H.R. 5098, the FTC Robust Elderly Protections and Organizational Requirements to Track Scams Act (REPORTS) Act was included in legislation the Subcommittee approved. This bill will help combat fraud against our nation's seniors and hold the FTC accountable.

"The legislation approved today will help bring about a more transparent and accountable FTC," said Congressman Bilirakis. "I am especially proud we advanced my FTC REPORTS Act as part of the larger FTC Process and Transparency Reform Act. By requiring annual reports from the FTC, we may better identify areas of potential reform and ways we can help protect consumers, especially seniors. There have been too many cases of exploitation of the elderly. I will continue working to protect our seniors from bad actors and empower all consumers."
