"At the start of another hurricane season and with the knowledge that the threat of terrorism against the United States has not decreased, it is important that we assess our nation's state of preparedness," Bilirakis said. "This hearing examined our current level of preparedness and provided the opportunity to consider steps that must be taken to address any areas of concern."
"As a valued friend and ally of the United States, it is my hope that this resolution will allow Cyprus to once again enjoy a peaceful and sovereign existence," said Bilirakis, Co-Chair of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus and member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
"Our nation's servicemembers embody the American spirit that has forged a better future for our nation's children and grandchildren. We must never forget what they have given to preserve the freedom that we enjoy.
"When our National Guard and reservists are called to duty, it is our duty to ensure that they have the peace of mind of knowing that their jobs are secure when they return," said Bilirakis, who is Vice Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee. "This legislation is a necessary step in supporting those who sign on to protect our nation and ensure our freedoms."
"We all have a role to play in preparedness. Put together an emergency kit, develop a family plan, and encourage others to prepare. Taking those steps now can make a huge difference should disaster strike," Bilirakis said. "While NOAA predicts a 'near normal' hurricane season, there have already been two named storms before the season has even started."
"This legislation will provide our nation's intelligence community with the resources and capabilities they need to keep our country safe.
"It is extremely shameful and troubling to grant a visa to an activist who represents the Communist Castro regime, and this raises concerns about the Obama administration's decision-making process when it comes to granting visas and its efforts to improve human rights.
"This is a historic moment and opportunity for the people of Egypt, and it is my hope that any future administration will value and protect basic human rights, especially the rights of religious minorities such as the Coptic Christians, who have suffered for so long under an oppressive Egypt."
The fair, at Spartan Manor, 6121 Massachusetts Avenue in New Port Richey, runs from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
"While there have been signs that our economy is beginning to turn around, many people are still struggling and searching for meaningful employment," Bilirakis said. "This fair will help put those seeking work in touch with employers and job creators in the Tampa Bay area."
Bilirakis and Castor have offered a budget neutral amendment that will be included in the National Defense Authorization Act, which the House will vote on this Friday. The amendment would increase the number of authorized National Guard Civil Support Teams from 55 to 57, keeping the Clearwater team intact.
