"I am grateful and encouraged by Egypt's decision to lift the travel ban imposed on pro-democracy NGO staff. However, until all charges against the 43 individuals are dropped and they are allowed to return to their work, this situation will not be fully resolved.
"America is in a fiscal crisis and this is a time in which every taxpayer dollar must be used efficiently and effectively. This certainly is not the best use of those dollars," Bilirakis said. "Department of Defense dollars should be used to protect our nation, not to entertain detainees."
This is an opportunity for the community to meet with the Congressman's staff without an appointment and is intended to complement the availability of his district offices in Palm Harbor and Plant City.
Constituents are invited to bring any issues, concerns, or requests for assistance related to Congress and the federal government.
"Our nation's veterans have upheld their promise to America, now it's time for us to help them," said Bilirakis, Vice Chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. "Creating jobs is my top priority in Congress, and that's why I am working to connect our veterans and their family members with employers in the Tampa Bay area."
"With this most recent politically-motivated assault on civil society, I once again emphasize the need to examine our substantial aid to the Egyptian government in order to show our commitment to those who support a free and democratic Egypt," Bilirakis said.
"For the fourth straight year, President Obama's budget fails to seriously address our nation's debt crisis and calls for higher taxes and increased stimulus spending, which is not a recipe for long-term economic growth. Instead, we need credible solutions that simplify the tax code, control federal spending, and preserve valuable services for seniors."
"This country is at a crossroads and Washington must take bold steps to help return America to the prosperous nation that we all know, love, and deserve. While President Obama spoke eloquently tonight, it takes more than words to improve the economy and create jobs.
"This project would have allowed the United States to utilize natural resources from our trusted neighbor rather than relying so heavily on an increasingly hostile Middle East, providing us with greater energy independence and national security.
As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Communications, Bilirakis oversees FEMA and ensures that it is efficient and effective in the use of its funds.
"I applaud the efforts of law enforcement to root out this scheme before it resulted in a loss of life. This foiled plot is a disturbing reminder that we must remain vigilant against terrorism not only abroad, but in our own backyards," said Bilirakis, who represents part of the Tampa Bay area.
