The Veterans' Mental Health and Other Care Improvements Act (S. 2162) authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to spend nearly $13 million for a new 50,000 square-foot multi-specialty outpatient clinic in the city of Brandon, Fla. and a new 100,000 square-foot primary care offsite facility for the James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa, Fla. The House passed the bill unanimously.

Earlier this year, the Department of Defense (DOD) began implementing a new law based on Bilirakis' bill H.R. 89, that expanded eligibility for Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) to disabled military retirees with less than 20 years of service. DOD is now accepting applications for CRSC from combat-disabled servicemembers who retired for medical reasons or retired under the Temporary Early Retirement Authority during the 1990s force reduction.

Yesterday the Miami Herald ran an article highlighting how identity theft has once again toped the list of all consumer complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commision for the eighth consecutive year.

Locally, Ernest Sparks of New Port Richey may have been the victim of identity theft when he failed to receive his economic stimulus check from the IRS.

Late last night, the U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation (H.R. 6064) that includes key portions of a bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis (R-Fla.) to create a federal grant program to help states establish silver alert notification systems to help find missing seniors. Gus plans to press for passage by the Senate and enactment into law before Congress adjourns for the year.

"Today's vote is a victory in the fight to locate missing seniors," Bilirakis said. "Passage of this bill brings Florida and other states without these life-saving systems one step closer to improving their ability to find missing seniors in the crucial few hours after they go missing."

The Resolution condemns the broadcast of incitement to violence against the United States, Americans, Israelis and the West by media based in the Middle East and urges governments throughout the Middle East, American allies, and other responsible nations to officially and publicly repudiate purveyors of incitement to violence against Americans and the United States. In addition, the resolution calls on the President to designate certain Middle Eastern media outlets as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT).
