"While Hurricane Irene isn't a major threat to the Florida coast, I still am encouraging all residents along the potential path of the storm to take the proper steps to protect yourself and your belongings," Bilirakis said. "Everyone should develop family disaster plans and create supply kits. As I like to say, we must hope for the best but prepare for the worst."

"These are historically tough economic times for Floridians," Bilirakis said. "I have said for years that there is nothing worse for creating jobs and growing an economy than burdensome regulations and over-taxation."

At issue is an EPA regulation that creates federal nutrient water quality criteria for lakes and flowing waters in Florida. The EPA created these standards with no input from the state, and overruled Florida's more effective and efficient water quality standards.

"Once again the House has passed a responsible solution that significantly reduces spending in the short term, caps spending in coming years and moves us toward a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution - all without raising taxes. "I have made it a priority to convey the need for improved benefits and opportunities for America's veterans and servicemembers," said Bilirakis, Vice Chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. "Whether it is providing assistance with VA claims or working with federal agencies to solve complex issues, my office is here to help those who selflessly defend and protect our nation."

"Cut, Cap and Balance is a strong proposal to get our debt under control and signals that we are serious about improving America's fiscal situation and changing the way Washington spends tax dollars," Bilirakis said. "With this plan, we will incorporate real spending cuts, limits on federal spending and a balanced budget amendment in order to address our debt crisis and kick start our nation's economy."

"I find it very troubling that the United States government would willfully allow weapons to be acquired by dangerous criminal and drug trafficking organizations, thus compromising our strategic and national interests," Bilirakis said. "This appears to be an extremely misguided effort by the ATF and DOJ and I hope that we do not allow such flawed programs to continue to threaten the safety of the United States."

"I am proud to stand in bipartisan solidarity with my colleagues to send an unequivocal message to the Palestinian Authority: The U.S. Congress will continue to stand by Israel during this tumultuous time in the Middle East and oppose any unilateral declaration or recognition of a Palestinian state outside of an agreement negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The various disasters we have had in the country this year illustrate that timely communication is vital in an emergency and that the availability of critical information can help individuals protect themselves from harm," Bilirakis said. "Whether through television, radio, mobile devices, the internet, social media, reverse 911, or warning sirens, emergency personnel must have prompt and reliable means to provide information to their citizens."
