Washington, DC (January 19, 2011) – Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) joined members of Florida's Congressional delegation to support the state's request for a disaster declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) following the severe weather conditions of the past several months that destroyed crops across the state.

A Dec. 27 article in HS Today highlights Gus' recent letter to the TSA asking for more information on the effectiveness of security screening techniques.

"Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) has written to John Pistole, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), to request briefings on whether or not the whole body imaging devices and pat downs have allowed transportation security officers (TSOs) to detect more concealed weapons or other contraband," the article says.

Recent reports indicate that there have been numerous incidents of illegal items going undetected and slipping through security checkpoints. Bilirakis, the top Republican on the Homeland Security Committee's Management, Investigations, and Oversight Subcommittee, is calling for briefings to determine the prevalence of these security lapses and the steps necessary to stop the problem.
