Bilirakis Named Vice Chair of House Committee on Veterans' Affairs

The Bay area is getting a little extra congressional clout when it comes to veterans affairs.

Washington, DC (January 20, 2011) – Rep. Gus Bilirakis (FL-09) today was named Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

The position will allow Bilirakis to play a vital role in providing veterans access to the benefits they have earned and deserve. At 1.7 million, Florida has the second-largest population of military veterans in the U.S.

"The House is listening to the message that Americans sent Washington this past fall," Bilirakis said. "America simply cannot afford a health care overhaul that costs jobs, spends over a trillion dollars and raises premiums. We will replace the overreaching health care law with sensible solutions that will lower costs, increase access to insurance, preserve the doctor-patient relationship and keep Americans in charge of their own health."

Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) joined members of Florida's Congressional delegation to support the state's request for a disaster declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) following the severe weather conditions of the past several months that destroyed crops across the state.
