Patients and providers offered insights into obstacles relating to the treatment of people living with Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis during a recent roundtable hosted by U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis.

Bilirakis, who is a member of the Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Health, hosted a roundtable focusing on neurological conditions on May 6 at the Carrollwood Cultural Center.

Individually, each rare disease impacts less than 200,000 people. With such a small patient population, rare diseases hardly gain the attention that more widespread diseases such as cancer or heart disease garner.

When viewed collectively, however, 30 million Americans suffer from a rare disease. That's about 1 in 10 people. That is more people than the entire population of Florida, which has nearly 20 million residents.

Washington, D.C. – Representative Gus Bilirakis, Vice-Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, today testified before the House Veterans' Affairs' Subcommittee on Health about his bill, the Creating Options for Veterans' Expedited Recovery (COVER) Act. Bilirakis' bipartisan legislation will establish a commission to examine VA's current therapy model and the potential benefits in incorporating complementary alternative therapies.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), member of the Energy and Commerce Committee's Health Subcommittee, today vote in favor of H.R. 2, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), to repeal and replace the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula. The bill was passed by a vote of 392 to 37. The bill will replace the SGR with a Merit-Based Incentive Payment System – MIPS – which will pay doctors based on quality, not volume.
