"I find it very troubling that the United States government would willfully allow weapons to be acquired by dangerous criminal and drug trafficking organizations, thus compromising our strategic and national interests," Bilirakis said. "This appears to be an extremely misguided effort by the ATF and DOJ and I hope that we do not allow such flawed programs to continue to threaten the safety of the United States."
Many of the nation's veterans are struggling under oppressive debt, poor credit, and rising unemployment. In fact nearly 1 million veterans are unemployed right now, and nearly one-third of those out of work are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. For America's heroes, this is not acceptable. These soldiers have upheld their promise to America, now it's time for America to help them.
On Thursday, Gus sat down for a live radio interview on WTBN's "Drive Time with Bill Bunkley" show. Gus discussed the ongoing debt limit negotiations, the need to create jobs, two of his veterans-related bills, and the upcoming veterans and military resource fair.
"I am proud to stand in bipartisan solidarity with my colleagues to send an unequivocal message to the Palestinian Authority: The U.S. Congress will continue to stand by Israel during this tumultuous time in the Middle East and oppose any unilateral declaration or recognition of a Palestinian state outside of an agreement negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians.
"The various disasters we have had in the country this year illustrate that timely communication is vital in an emergency and that the availability of critical information can help individuals protect themselves from harm," Bilirakis said. "Whether through television, radio, mobile devices, the internet, social media, reverse 911, or warning sirens, emergency personnel must have prompt and reliable means to provide information to their citizens."
"I regularly visit with businesses throughout my Congressional district," said Bilirakis, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee. "Too often, I hear from them that the federal government appears, at best, indifferent to the concerns of America's job creators."
On Thursday, the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Management held a hearing to address DHS's efforts to protect American jobs while securing the nation.
"Frank has always been more than willing to lend a helping hand to his community and to his fellow veterans," Bilirakis said. "He has been a true hero for me as I have made it a priority to ensure our veterans receive the benefits they deserve. His devotion to these men and women and his years of ongoing service to both them and to their families makes him an ideal candidate to receive the Patriot Award."
"It's heartbreaking to watch the events in Greece and I pray that the people of Greece will have the strength, determination, and patience to get through this economic crisis," Bilirakis said. "I am pleased Greece took the right course of action and passed austerity measures, but the situation in Greece should serve as a wakeup call to all nations, including the U.S. Sadly, we could be in the same predicament very soon if we don't get our own financial house in order. That's why I'm pushing for a balanced budget amendment and dramatically lower spending.
On Monday, Gus was featured on 970 WFLA in Tampa, where he discussed the House's plan to vote on a balanced budget amendment.
"We have to change our ways and I think this is a good start," Gus said of the proposal. He also discussed the debt ceiling and the need for substantial spending cuts as a way to help improve the nation's fiscal situation and create jobs.
Terrorists have made it clear of their desire to use Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) against the U.S. According to terrorism experts, there is a strong likelihood of a WMD attack. The U.S. must be prepared for this grim possibility.
On Thursday, Gus, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications, and Rep. Dan Lungren (CA) Chairman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Security Technologies, held a joint hearing to address these concerns.
