On Wednesday, April 4, between 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, members of the Congressman's staff will be available to constituents at the Hudson Library at 8012 Library Road.

Congressman will spearhead Policy Committee efforts on veterans' issues

Washington, D.C. -Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor) has been named Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee Veterans' Affairs Task Force. In this position, Bilirakis will spearhead the Policy Committee's efforts to address veterans' issues. He will have the authority to conduct hearings and arrange for speakers to educate him and his colleagues on veterans' issues.

Veterans and military medical centers have a proud tradition of world-class medical care for members of the Armed Forces. Unfortunately, this reputation received a black-eye with the unsettling and unacceptable realization of substandard facilities, outpatient care, and oversight at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Legislation would add additional medical conditions that are eligible for disability compensation

- Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor) proudly announces the introduction of H.R. 1197, the Prisoners of War (POW) Benefits Act.

H.R. 1197 establishes presumptions for disability compensation for several diseases, including Type II Diabetes and Osteoporosis. This will allow former POWs to claim these disabilities as service-connected and qualify them for disability compensation.

Contract awarded to Clearwater Boeing facility

- Today, Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor) announced the awarding of a $598,578 defense contract to the Boeing Co. facility in Clearwater, FL.

The contract will exercise an option for 10 Harpoon Tactical Block II Grade B All-Up-Round (AUR) missiles and 10 MK631 Canister AUR Containers.

Tax credits will be targeted to upgrade homes and business facilities

- Today, Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis announced that he introduced H.R. 913, legislation that provides targeted tax credits to home and business owners to strengthen and upgrade their buildings in case of a natural disaster.

Specifically, H.R. 913 would allow a tax credit of 25%, not to exceed $5,000, to cover the following expenditures:

Unfortunately, Floridians constantly receive such reminders - generally in, the form of hurricanes. While the summer of 2006 provided the state and its residents with much need relief from natural disasters, the fact remains, our state has and will continue to endure the wrath of Mother Nature.

Contract awarded to Oldsmar Lockheed Martin facility

. - Today, Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis (R-Palm Harbor) announced the awarding of a $5,363,953 defense contract to the Lockheed Martin facility in Oldsmar, FL.

The contract is for procurement of two Virginia Class Acoustic Rapid Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Insertion (ARCI) sonar system upgrades, and 4,129 hours of engineering services for ARCI improvements.
