Looking back on 2016, a turbulent year for sure in politics, we often saw the biggest rivalries and the loudest pundits take center stage. All along, my main focus was always working hard on behalf of Florida's 12th District. We accomplished some important legislative wins for our communities, with 16 initiatives I wrote being signed into law this year.
Each time I have the privilege of meeting the heroes who wore our nation’s uniform, I am reminded they represent the very best of America. From World War II and Korea to Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan, we would not be the nation we are today without those who served.
This summer, during Congress' major district work period, I had the opportunity to meet with many of my constituents to hear their thoughts and ideas on the issues they care most about. While I come home every weekend, the August work period offers an extended period of time for me to truly connect with the residents of Florida's Twelfth Congressional District.
America is the land of opportunity. Yet after decades of programs in which trillions of dollars have been spent, some people are still stuck in the cycle of poverty. In order to fix the problem, we need to think differently. I am working to help Americans pursue the careers they want and contribute to our thriving nation. I am working to help people get back on their feet.
It's no wonder Americans pay tens of millions of dollars a year for tax preparers to wade through 70,000 pages worth of tax law. The tax code is confusing, and sends too much money to Washington and too many jobs overseas.
Many of my constituents, local businesses, and organizations are struggling in today's economy. Although our state brings in many tourists and our local businesses continue working hard to help our communities thrive, our government is not encouraging and embracing growth as best it could.
Many local patients and families have discussed their health care struggles with me. Too many individuals, families, and businesses in our state are facing high premiums and deductible costs under the administration’s health care law. (Just this week we’ve learned Aetna will no longer be insuring Floridians further confounding folks who need health coverage).
Now more than ever before, we need to work together to ensure the safety, security and long term success of our nation. I am proud to join my colleagues in the House in an effort to prioritize the things that truly matter.
This summer has been filled with important legislative landmarks, major hearings and votes, meetings with constituents, events in Florida's twelfth district and our nation's Capitol, and personal family milestones. Here are some of the highlights from the month:
Florida has some of the most dangerous roads in the country. Many lives have been lost due to car accidents, and we all have horror stories trying to navigate the hazards of a daily commute. But, did you know, there have been more deaths related to drug abuse than car accidents in the U.S.?
Last week, I held my 10th Annual Veterans' Fair to help support local Veterans and gather their ideas on issues important to them.
Women's History Month allows us time to reflect on the many important women who have had a lasting impact on our past. This month also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the women making history today for tomorrow's generation of innovators, newsmakers, and community leaders.
Rare Disease Week gave us the opportunity to raise awareness and encourage research to find cures and treatments for rare diseases. Rare diseases are not so rare in our nation.

Why should people care about the repeal of the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula?
In his State of the Union address, the President said: "Between now and this spring, we have a chance to negotiate a comprehensive agreement that prevents a nuclear-armed Iran; secures America and our allies – including Israel; while avoiding yet another Middle East conflict."
On October 1, 2013, Healthcare.gov – the main website for the President's health care law – went live. The President and his allies in the House and Senate sold this law on a number of promises – the ability to keep your plan and doctor, and an average reduction of $2500 in premiums for a family of four, to name a few.
The most recently released economic report says that the country added 248,000 jobs to the workforce in September.
As a second generation Greek American, I have a firsthand understanding of the importance and power of the American dream, as well as, the sensitivity and passion surrounding the issue of immigration reform. On Friday, April, 18, the Obama Administration elected to "indefinitely delay" a decision to approve or deny a permit to build the Keystone pipeline until at least after the 2014 elections, further withholding the prospect of more than 40,000 jobs and $2.1 billion in earnings.
As a member of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, I participate in hearings and briefings on a regular basis about all aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare. It seems that each week, Obamacare brings more bad news, from cancelled plans and rising health care costs to limiting options for doctors and medications.
As Vice-Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, I am dismayed at the recent allegations of bureaucratic misconduct, which may have attributed to the deaths of veterans who were stuck waiting for care within the VA.

On Wednesday, Gus, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, attended a hearing titled "Investigating the Chinese Threat, Part Two: Human Rights Abuses, Torture and Disappearances." He questioned human rights leader Rebiya Kadeer about why the Obama Administration has not agreed to meet with her, despite having met with previous administrations about human rights violations in China.
Gus, the Vice Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, attended a joint hearing on July 25 with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki titled "Back From the Battlefield: DoD and VA Collaboration to Assist Service Members Returning to Civilian Life." His question was about efforts to combat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD.
As a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, Gus spoke on the House Floor on July 19 to recall a somber anniversary that has pained the Cypriot and Hellenic communities for the past 38 years. Watch here:
On Tuesday, Gus visited the American Red Cross Digital Operations Center, which utilizes social media to monitor affected areas during and after an emergency in order to aid disaster relief.
Gus spoke on the House Floor in advance of a vote to repeal the Democratic health care overhaul, which has raised taxes, cost jobs, and limited personal control of health care. Americans deserve meaningful and affordable health care reform that will lower costs, protect consumers, and increase accessibility, while allowing Americans to control their own health decisions.
Last week, Gus, who is Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, presented military service medals to two constituents.
In a surprise ceremony, Gus presented the Bronze Star Medal, along with a host of other service medals, to Palm Harbor resident Robert Smiddy, who served as part of the U.S. Army's 97th Infantry Division during World War II.

On Tuesday, Gus gathered leaders within the tax and consumer protection industry to discuss the growing problem of tax refund fraud.
Since 2008, the IRS has identified 470,000 incidents of identity theft affecting more than 390,000 taxpayers. After reviewing only 30 percent of the 100 million returns filed this year, the IRS has already confirmed 2.6 million cases of fraud.

As Vice Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Gus chaired a hearing on June 19 examining the Department of Veterans Affairs disability claims backlog.
During the hearing, Gus also addressed a problem with the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), which is meant to provide one year of training and education benefits to certain unemployed veterans.

President Obama's misunderstanding of the economy seems to be far worse than we thought. That's what Americans are realizing after the president's astonishing comments at a press conference last week.
On Tuesday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its annual long-term budget outlook, again confirming that unless Washington makes significant fiscal reforms, American families face a bleak fiscal and economic future.
We once again find ourselves at the start of the Atlantic Hurricane season. Last year, Americans spanning the eastern seaboard experienced the impacts of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Many communities in the northeast are still working to recover from those storms.

The unemployment situation in the United States continues to remain a top priority for Gus.
The Tampa Bay area is ground zero for IRS tax fraud, and Gus has co-sponsored legislation that would improve communication between local law enforcement and the IRS in order to help curb this growing problem.
Gas prices in Tampa Bay have nearly doubled during the past three years, causing unneeded uncertainty during this tough economic time.
TAMPA ? Three Florida lawmakers are urging the Department of Veterans Affairs to move forward with a major construction project at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center that a VA cost analysis said would more than pay for itself over the next 30 years.
Last Saturday, Gus hosted a forum to highlight the treatment of Coptic Christians in Egypt, honor the late Pope Shenouda, and promote religious freedom in the Middle East and worldwide.
Bipartisanship and 'crowdfunding'

On Thursday, the House will vote to repeal yet another provision included in the massive and flawed health care overhaul.
Gus would like to share two recent reports that are prime examples of the carelessness with which your tax dollars are being spent, and the cost that it will have on the country's economic recovery.
One of the 16 Americans charged in Egypt for promoting democracy and religious freedom is John Tomaszewski, a former staff member for Congressman Bilirakis.
Tomaszewski was in Egypt when a travel ban came into force and was one of six Americans who sought refuge at the American embassy. After the travel ban was released, he recently returned to Washington.
Earlier this week, Gus met with dignitaries from Tampa Bay Consular Corps and representatives with Hillsborough County to promote economic development and foreign trade opportunities in the region.
Recently, President Obama released his annual budget proposal. For the fourth straight year, his budget fails to seriously address our nation's debt crisis and calls for higher taxes and increased stimulus spending. This budget punishes small businesses, job creators, and seniors at the expense of the administration's spending addiction.
Rep. Gus Bilirakis (FL-09) applauded the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday for supporting his amendment to the Protecting Investment in Oil Shale the Next Generation of Environmental, Energy, and Resource Security (PIONEERS) Act, which the House will vote on later this week.
Last week, Gus and several of his colleagues sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asking him to amend its policy of blacking out games in the home market that have not sold out within 72 hours of kickoff.
This past week, Gus joined the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus, and is currently the sole Florida representative in the caucus.
With more than 300,000 manufacturing jobs across the state of Florida, Gus understands the important role manufacturing will play when it comes to improving the local and national economy.
In a surprise ceremony on Wednesday, Gus presented Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee with a Congressional commendation for providing honor escorts to soldiers who have been killed in action.

Gus encouraged the Senate and President Obama to act on the Keystone Pipeline project, which will create tens of thousands of American jobs and reduce America's dependency on oil from overseas.

Last week, Gus joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in submitting a letter to the House Ways & Means Committee, which crafts the nation's tax policy, encouraging the committee to include the extension of the state and local sales tax deduction when Congress considers a larger tax extension package early next year.
On Monday, Gus toured the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital in Tampa, which is undergoing an expansion to accommodate the growing need of women's and infant's care in the Tampa Bay area. Sadly, many of the infants at the NICU are born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), meaning they were born to a woman addicted to drugs.
On Friday, Oct. 14, Gus attended a House Homeland Security Committee hearing titled "A Call to Action: Narco-Terrorism's Threat to the Southern U.S. Border" and questioned witnesses about drug cartels and violence along the border.
Gus asked the following questions:
As Vice Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Gus has been an advocate for veterans services. So when he found out that some people were taking advantage of veterans by charging them for filing claims with the VA, he took action. This week, the House passed a bill containing language that will reinstate criminal penalties on those who charge veterans unauthorized fees.
As Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications, Gus is responsible for oversight of FEMA, emergency grant programs, communication during emergency situations, and disaster response and recovery efforts.
Gus spoke today at a FEMA conference called "Getting Real II: Inclusive Emergency Management for the Whole Community" about the need for communities to improve the way they prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate the impact of disasters.

Last week, Gus visited with 970 WFLA about the ongoing debt negotiations and his commitment to finding a responsible solution to the nation's fiscal problems that controls federal spending and moves America toward a balanced budget without raising taxes.

Washington, DC (July 13, 2011) – Since being elected to Congress, Gus has made it one of his top priorities to be a voice for all religious minorities wherever they may be persecuted and to continuously work in a bipartisan manner with his colleagues to condemn violations of religious freedom throughout the world.
Many of the nation's veterans are struggling under oppressive debt, poor credit, and rising unemployment. In fact nearly 1 million veterans are unemployed right now, and nearly one-third of those out of work are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. For America's heroes, this is not acceptable. These soldiers have upheld their promise to America, now it's time for America to help them.
On Thursday, Gus sat down for a live radio interview on WTBN's "Drive Time with Bill Bunkley" show. Gus discussed the ongoing debt limit negotiations, the need to create jobs, two of his veterans-related bills, and the upcoming veterans and military resource fair.
On Monday, Gus was featured on 970 WFLA in Tampa, where he discussed the House's plan to vote on a balanced budget amendment.
"We have to change our ways and I think this is a good start," Gus said of the proposal. He also discussed the debt ceiling and the need for substantial spending cuts as a way to help improve the nation's fiscal situation and create jobs.
Terrorists have made it clear of their desire to use Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) against the U.S. According to terrorism experts, there is a strong likelihood of a WMD attack. The U.S. must be prepared for this grim possibility.
A recent report from the Associated Press uncovers yet another flaw in the health care law, a flaw that would let several million middle-class people become eligible for Medicaid.
Last Friday, June 10, Gus held a Congressional hearing in Clearwater, FL, to discuss emergency preparedness issues. As Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications, Bilirakis is responsible for ensuring that federal, state and local agencies are prepared for potential disasters.
To help improve student visa security and close a loophole that has allowed terrorists into the U.S., Gus in March introduced a bill to strengthen the student visa program. In honor of National Small Business Week (May 16-20), Gus met with several Tampa-area business owners to hear from them how the federal government affects their bottom line and to discuss how to best help small business in the Tampa area.
After learning of abuses by groups charging veterans money to file claims for benefits they may never receive, Gus introduced HR 1826, bipartisan legislation that would make it a misdemeanor to illegally charge veterans for filing a disability claim.

Nearly 25 World War II veterans from the Tampa Bay area were able to fly to Washington, DC, on May 3, 2011 to spend time at the World War II Memorial. The trip was arranged by the Honor Flight Network, a non-profit program founded five years ago to bring WWII veterans to visit the nation's capital.
On April 27, Gus held his annual Career Fair, where more than 60 employers met with more than 400 job-seekers.

Over the weekend, Gus who serves on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, presented Mildred Wilson, widow of Staff Sergeant Elmer Wilson, with a bronze Tuskegee Airmen Congressional Gold Medal in honor of her husband's courageous service during World War II.

On Thursday Gus was a guest on WTBN 's Drive Time with Bill Bunkley. He joined a panel discussion on Health Care reform with Dr. Jim Rowsey, Legislative Aid for Medical Legislation for U.S. Senator Tom Corbin.
On Thursday, Gus received a plaque from the National Silver Haired Congress and the Florida Silver Haired Legislature for his work on the Silver Alert legislation.
On Saturday morning over 500 people attended Gus's Foreclosure Assistance Workshop in Palm Harbor. Gus brought together leaders in home finance to aid families and individuals in navigating these uncertain times. The event provided an opportunity for families to meet with their lenders one on one to discuss their options.
This morning, Gus met with last year's Congressional Art Competition winner, Lindsey Rapp, of Safety Harbor. Her painting, "Borders" has spent the past year hanging in the walk way to the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

Yesterday, Gus hosted his seminar on consumer fraud and identity theft.
The seminar was held at the CARES Rao Musunuru, M.D. Activity Center in Hudson and featured officials from the Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Postal Service.
On Tuesday, Gus joined with Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS), and Representative Zack Space (D-OH) to introduce bipartisan legislation that increases awareness, education and research into congenital heart disease – a rapidly growing national health problem.

Every 40 seconds, someone in America has a stroke. In fact, it is the third leading cause of deaths in the nation. Each year, during the month of May, Americans band together, not only to share their support in the fight against stroke, but also raise awareness of how it can be treated, and more importantly, prevented.

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month. We see the heart-wrenching and troubling stories on the news about victims of sexual assault, but it becomes even more disturbing when we realize that it is even happening in our own community.
Florida is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the agency's design and construction standards for community shelters. The state believes that FEMA's 361 standard for shelter construction is too rigorous for the force of winds that hurricane shelters in Florida generally encounter.
The Issue
Yesterday, Congressman Bilirakis introduced The Silver Alert Grant Program Act of 2008 (H.R. 5898). If enacted, this program would provide U.S. states and territories the opportunity to establish ‘Silver Alert' notification systems to locate missing individuals suffering from dementia-related illnesses.
In an effort to prevent further erosion and flooding, last year Gus successfully secured funding for the City of Tarpon Springs to improve the conditions of the City's bayou banks.
The April edition of ESPN's The Magazine, which hit newstands last week, contained a quote from Gus on the Tampa Bay Rays 2008 season. His comments were part of a larger article ("Take It to the House") previewing the 2008 Baseball Season with opinions from each team's local members of Congress.
On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, H. Res. 997, a resolution supporting a NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) for Georgia and Ukraine. Gus, who is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on Europe, co-sponsored the resolution and supported its passage.
National Library Service. Gus has signed on to a letter to House Appropriators calling on Congress to fully fund the National Library Service (NLS) program's audio book transition from analog to digital technology.
On Wednesday, Gus met with Miss America (1999) and tireless advocate for diabetes research and awareness, Nicole Johnson Baker.
The two met between votes in Gus's Capitol Hill office in Washington, D.C. and discussed efforts in Congress to increase diabetes research and education.

Local community college officials from Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties were in Washington on Tuesday to discuss this year's legislative priorities with Gus.
On Friday, Gus presented the Plant City Police Department (PCPD) with more than $131,000 in federal funding specifically requested by the Congressman for the purchase of crime fighting technology, including digital cameras and laptop computers.
These federal funds were included in recent federal spending legislation signed into law in December 2007.

An act of vandalism to a 30-mile-long anhydrous ammonia pipeline in Riverview, Fla., has raised serious concerns about pipeline security. On Nov. 13, three teenage boys had drilled a hole into the pipeline in an alleged search for money. The leak resulted in the release of a noxious chemical cloud and the evacuation of thousands of local Hillsborough residents.
Gus comments on the announcement by Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez that he will be stepping down.
